This Bitter Earth

Music is by Dinah Washington & Max Richter. Footage is “Symptoms in Schizophrenia” from archive.org.
My challenge was to make a video that wasn’t likely to scare children, having been accused (with some justification) of being “too sinister” in the last few (Worm Tamer by Grinderman, Korsakoff’s Psychosis by Return to Netley Things Have Changed, Caligulove – Them Crooked Vultures & Betty Boop, Manners by Return to Netley Things Have Changed, Hominid by Return To Netley Things Have Changed, etc.).

I first heard this version of Dinah Washingtons’s (achingly beautiful) song (like everyone else) in the closing credits to Shutter Island, Martin Scorsese’s latest movie.

Lyrics

This bitter earth
What fruit it bears
What good is love
That no one shares
And if my life is like the dust
That hides the glow of a rose
What good am I
Heaven only knows

This bitter Earth
Can it be so cold
Today you’re young
Too soon your old
But while a voice
Within me cries
I’m sure someone
May answer my call
And this bitter earth
May not be so bitter after all

  • [..YouTube..] Ironic- one element of “Shutter Island” was speaking against Nazis and their experiments, and this video reminds me strongly of Nazi pro-eugenics film “das Erbe” about the so-called incurables… I do hope this uneasiness about motivation is unfounded…
